DAY 1

YEREVAN  

Arrival at the airport and transfer to the hotel.

DAY 2

YEREVAN

Breakfast at the hotel.
The tour starts with a visit to History Museum. The museum is an ideal place to start your exploration of new and old Yerevan as it provides an excellent introduction to the history of the city. Then we will continue with a walking tour of Yerevan exploring various layers of its history – medieval shrines hidden behind imposing Soviet-style façades, narrow streets of the old center with sunlight playing on its pink walls, Blue Mosque on Mashtots Avenue, Republic Square, Cascade and Mother Armenia, Opera House and ambitious projects of Armenia – North Avenue and spacious Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral consecrated by His Holiness the Patriarch of all Armenians in the presence of His Holiness Pope John Paul ll. A cultural showcase not to be missed is Matenadaran, one of the world’s oldest repositories of Greek, Persian and Arabic manuscripts. Our next stop is Genocide Memorial situated on the hills overlooking the city, a solemn reminder of the first genocide of the 20th century. On a lighter note we can make an optional excursion to Ararat Brandy factory.

DAY 3

 

ECHMIADZIN-ZVARTNOTS-GARNI-GEGHARD-YEREVAN

Breakfast at the hotel. Excursion to Armavir Region: tour to Echmiadzin – the holy seat of the Supreme Patriarch-Catholicos of all Armenians. The Cathedral was built in 303 on the site of a pagan temple after the adoption of Christianity as a state religion in 301. Here we will also visit St. Hripsime Church (7th century). A few kilometers from Echmiadzin there are the ruins of the 7th century AD Temple of Zvartnots which is going to be our next stop.
Drive through the picturesque Avan Canyon skirting formidable cliffs and passing exotic-looking gorges until a green plateau by the Azat River comes into view. Here, in the harmony of  relief and the virgin nature we will see the pagan Garni architectural complex of the 1st century and feel the spirit of ancient ages. Another ten minutes ride through the gorge will take us to the cave monastery of Geghard (12th –13th centuries). Lunch at a local restaurant. Dinner at a local restaurant.

DAY 4

KHOR VIRAP-NORAVANK-ZORATS KARER-GORIS

The day starts with a visit to Khor-Virap (4th-17th cc). Khor Virap is one of the romantically sited monasteries in Armenia with views across a bast plain to Turkey and the twin peaks of Mount Ararat. Here, in the atmosphere of historical environment and vivid imagination you will notice the Noah’s Ark in the snows of Ararat.
Visit to Noravank, the masterpiece of medieval architect Momik situated above an awesome gorge. Today we will also visit Areni wine factory where you can taste local wines and get acquainted with the production process. 
Visit Zorats Karer. The site is located on a rocky promontory near Sisian. About 223 large stone tombs can be found in the area. It was explored by a team of archaeologists from the Institut für Vorderasiatische Archäologie, University of Munich who published their findings in 2000. Drive to Goris. Lunch at a local restaurant. Dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at the hotel in Goris.

DAY 5

GORIS-TATEV-SELIM –NORATUS-SEVAN

Breakfast at the hotel.
Sightseeing of Old Goris town. Stop al Halidzor Village to take the longest in the world tramway (built in October 2010) to Tatev Monastery. According to historian Stepanos Orbelian, the first church of what later became the mighty walled complex of Tatev was actually built in the 4th century. In the 8th century, it was made the throne of the Syunik bishopric and in the 9th century, it expanded, becoming a major feudal power.
Drive to Sevan via Selim pass. Visit Noratus -medieval cemetery with a large number of early khachkars located in the village of Noratus. The cemetery has the largest cluster of khachkars in the republic of Armenia. It is currently the largest surviving cemetery with khachkars. Visit Hayrivank dating to the 9th century. Visit Lake Sevan- the emerald of Armenia. Lunch at a local restaurant. Dinner at a local restaurant or at the hotel in Sevan.

DAY 6

SEVAN-HAGHPAT-SANAHIN-SADAKHLO BORDER-TBILISI

Breakfast at the hotel.

Drive to Sadakhlo border via sightseeing tour to the 10th-13th centuries Haghpat and Sanahin historical and architectural monuments set amidst forest-clad hills close to the town of Alaverdi. The monuments are preserved by UNESCO and included in the World Heritage List. Arrive at Sadakhlo border. Meet with Georgian guide and driver and transfer to Tbilisi. Check in to the hotel. Overnight at hotel in Tbilisi. 

DAY 7

TBILISI CITY TOUR

After breakfast enjoy the sightseeing tour of old part of Tbilisi - the multicultural and multi religious city with 1500 years of history.  Visit Metekhi Church, 12th -13th century cross-cupola church which used to be the part of Royal residential complex. Have a look at statue of Mother of Georgia. Visit Narikala Fortress, Sulfur Bath Area- high in sulfurs and other minerals, with a constant temperature of 38C to 40C, the waters have long been used as a therapeutic aid for a range of ailments, Tbilisi Synagogue and Sioni Cathedral. Have a look at Tbilisi Mosque. Walk along the narrow streets of the old town, full with souvenir shops, cafes and art galleries. In the afternoon visit Archaeological Treasury Hall in Georgian National Museum(Closed on Mon), where you will see the examples of ancient gold and silver objects and jewelry made by early Georgian goldsmiths. Lunch and Dinner at local restaurants in Tbilisi.
Overnight in Tbilisi.

DAY 8

TBILISI – MTSKHETA – KAZBEGI

After Breakfast drive towards the ancient town of Mtskheta which is the old capital of eastern Georgia and the most important religious center of the country. Visit two UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Mtskheta: Jvari Monastery – the best example of 6th century Georgian architecture located at the top of the hill overlooking the confluence of Aragvi and Mtkvari rivers. Former, the place was a site of a pagan temple. And Svetitskhoveli Cathedral – the magnificent 11th century fortified church, referred as the most sacred place for Georgians, where the Robe of Christ is buried. Continue journey to the north, along the Georgian Military Highway, main transport artery linking Georgia with Russia into the mountainous provinces of the Greater Caucasus which with its breathtaking sceneries has been the inspiration for many world-famous poets and writers. On the way visit 16th century fortress Ananuri, overlooking Jinvali reservoir. Stop for lunch en route in Gudauri ski resort (2,100m) restaurant. Continue journey via Cross Pass - the highest point on the Military Highway (2379 m). Arrive in Kazbegi. Dinner and overnight at the Rooms Hotel Kazbegi.

DAY 9

KAZBEGI – GERGETI TRINITY CHURCH – TBILISI

In the morning drive by 4 WD vehicles from the hotel to the 14th century Holy Trinity Church, located at the beautiful solitary spot on the top of the hill, at an elevation of 2170 meters. Enjoy the breathtaking view of snow cowered Mount Kazbeg - extinct volcano which is the third highest mountain of Georgia (5,047m) and one of the most popular destinations for alpinists. Mt. Kazbeg is associated with myth of Prometheus, according to the legend he was chained on the mountain in punishment for having stolen fire from the gods and having given it to mortals. Afterwards drive back to Tbilisi. Stop for lunch en route in Gudauri.
Arrive in Tbilisi. Overnight at hotel in Tbilisi.

DAY 10

TBILISI –

Check Out from the hotel. Transfer to the airport for flight.
